Advanced Algebra (Algebra 2) / Trigonometry
2024-25: Tuesdays 10:00 - 11:35 am AND Thursdays 12:25 - 2:00 pm
In person classes held in the Allied Gardens/Grantville area of San Diego with remote option.
Pre-requisite: Proficiency with Algebra I and basic Geometry concepts. An appropriate placement assessment is here - 75% or better is recommended. Students who are close to this level may be able to fill gaps as they go, but must have the time and capacity to work hard to so. Ask instructor if in doubt.
THREE TRACKS: The class is designed to prepare students for college, while accommodating three possible tracks.
Track 1: Calculus bound next year, combining Algebra 2 and Pre Calc in one year (Honors), OR student took Algebra 2 last year and this is their Pre Calc year.
Track 2: Algebra 2 level testing only. Keeping math options open and likely to take Pre Calculus next year, optional participation with advanced level topics
Track 3: Algebra 2 level only, likely to select a non-science college major such as Business.
The student’s overall workload and testing requirements will depend on what track they select by the end of the first semester.Minimum 8 students, maximum 18.
Instructor provides all print materials , no curriculum purchase. Your student will be loaned a text, Precalculus: Mathematics for Calculus, 6th Edition by Stewart/Redlin/Watson, and provided supplemental handouts / activities with fully worked solutions.
Fee including materials: $550 per semester, or 8 payments of $140 per month. Discounts available to homeschool families paying privately - See payment and discount terms.
See Class Overview for general information on class structure, instructor, etc.
This class may be reported on a high school transcript as either an Algebra 2 course (Honors level for a 90% or better) or a high school level Pre-Calculus course if the student completes the additional Precalc level work assigned. Credit for both courses may be assigned by semester if all honors work is completed. Students who have completed Algebra 2 previously take this course as Pre-Calculus.
Regardless of which track a student is on, the course covers material that ensures they are prepared for college entrance exams (SAT/ACT) and placement exams. A student's work ethic has been the most significant factor in success as long as they have attained a good Algebra 1 / Geometry base coming into the course.
Materials: Because all the material in an Algebra 2 course is also covered in this text, the class uses Precalculus: Mathematics for Calculus, 6th Edition (Stewart/Redlin/Watson). Your student may purchase a text rather than use a loaned one if they prefer to own it, Hardcover or Paperback is fine. This is one edition earlier of the textbook currently used by Grossmont Community College for their Math 170 and 175 courses.
A TI83/84 Plus series graphing calculator is required.
